Pit Fit Training

“In 2002 I knew I needed to step up my fitness. I have been working with PitFit ever since, and through their training and the extra effort Jim spends by traveling to my home in Napoleon has kept me on the fitness fast track.” 2005 was the first year I had driven road courses in an Indycar, and my training kept me fresh every race.” --Sam Hornish Jr., 2001, 2002, 2006 Indycar Champion

PitFit Programs

Driver Human Performance

Maintaining optimal levels of fitness while driving the racecar is crucial to the performance of the racing athlete.  The PitFit programs have been painstakingly designed to focus on an individual driver’s mental and physical fitness in the specific type of car and series they compete.  Every driver wants the most out of themselves each and every time they put on their helmet.  Drivers ranging from Indy 500 champions to recreational club racers have used the PitFit programs to gain an edge on the competition. PitFit has honed the physical and mental fitness of three of the last six Indycar champions; Scott Dixon (2003), Sam Hornish Jr. (2006), and Dario Franchitti (2007).  Sam and Dario also won the Indy 500 in 2006 and 2007 and have now taken their training programs to NASCAR.

    Driver Fitness Training

    Indianapolis-Based Drivers
For the driver looking for the best program available.  Drivers residing in Indianapolis train with our elite staff of trainers 1-4 hours daily.  Activities such as boxing, swimming, strength training, rock climbing, reaction drills, and lake rowing are merely a few of what a driver will endure on a weekly basis.  This program is challenging for even the fittest athlete, but also organized so drivers of any fitness level can participate.

    D.I. (Drop-In) Program
Drivers often wish to take part in the PitFit program on an individual basis for only a few days or a week.  The D.I. program allows drivers to train with PitFit when their schedule allows.  This option combined with e-PitFit gives any driver the best possible training while not living in Indianapolis.

    e-PitFit
This revolutionary internet-based training program provides any driver with a computer the expert program design and instruction PitFit is famous for.  Through a detailed question and answer process each driver is assigned their own PitFit trainer to specifically design a training program based on their driving needs, schedule, and available equipment.  Each driver receives either a training DVD or manual specifically showing every exercise in the program.  The driver also has their own password-protected online training log that allows their trainer to view training data and make adjust to the program.  E-PitFit, combined with the D.I. program, makes a potent combination that will suit any level of driving athlete.  This is the same program used by the Formula BMW USA program since 2004 for its Education and Coaching program.

    Pit Crew Human Performance

The pit crew of a racing team is often the difference between victory and defeat as they change tires and fuel the car in a pit stop.  Keying on the specific strength and agility necessary to make these athletes perform at their best is the main objective of our expert staff.  Through evaluation of human performance, specialized training, and video analysis, each crew member and the entire team goes into each pit stop knowing that have the edge on all other teams.  The PitFit staff uses Dartfish video analysis software to assist the team in breaking down pit stops in a race as well as in practice.

    Sports Nutrition

Fueling the driving athlete is a primary piece of the racing puzzle.  Without the proper nutrition, the driver’s racing, training, and mental performance suffers.  PitFit offers two options for the driver looking to lose weight, gain, muscle, and keep their human engine running at its best when in the car.

Individual Nutrition Consultations - Drivers meet with Registered Dietitian and Ironman triathlete Heather Fink, R.D., M.S., to discuss the right formula and nutrition plan needed to be at their best.  Heather has experience working with many drivers in the areas of weight loss, weight gain, and race weekend nutrition and hydration plans.

    Mental Training

To keep the mind as fit as the driver, PitFit has recruited one of the top mental training coaches in the world, Dr. Jacques Dallaire.  Dr. Dallaire is the president of Performance Prime, and has worked with some of the top drivers in the world, including Nigel Mansell, Jeff Gordon, and Helio Castroveves along some of the top racing athletes over the last twenty years.

    Fitness Camps and Workshops

When drivers need to get in shape in a short period of time, they come to one of our grueling “QuickFit Fitness Camps.  These 2-5 day programs have been used by top organizations which include Formula BMW USA (2004, 2006-2008) and the Forsythe Atlantic Racing teams since 2006.  While the actual menu varies, a driver can be sure they will learn what their limits are while gaining an education on nutrition, fitness, and mental toughness.  This program is especially suitable for the team working to test the physical and mental toughness of its current and potential drivers.  Swimming, boxing, rock climbing, crewing, and numerous activities are part of the time spent with the expert PitFit staff.  It’s quite common for local drivers like Indycar champion Scott Dixon and others to engage in the workouts.

For the driver wishing to receive hands-on training, attendance at a PitFit Driver Fitness workshop is a must.  Look for workshops on our 2008 calendar, or contact us to inquire about setting up a workshop for your club or organization.
