Staff – PitFit Training, INC
Jim Leo | CSCS | Founder and President
Jim Leo began developing the concept of PitFit Training in the Winter of 1993, when as a trainer at Detroit Diesel Corporation, he asked owner and Indycar legend Roger Penske if he could improve the fitness of the Indycar team. Penske gave Leo the thumbs up, and in 1994 after a full season on his program, Penske Racing dominated the Indycar season and won the Indy 500. After leaving Penske in 1997 to form PitFit Training, he worked directly with the upstart team PacWest Racing, helping drivers Mark Blundell and Mauricio Gugelmin along with the pit crews to four victories in the last eight races.
As the demand for Leo’s services increased, he left PacWest Racing in 2000 after working with his long-time client and friend Scott Dixon to win the 2000 Indy Lights championship. Since then, Jim Leo has worked with many of the biggest names in North American auto racing, including Dixon, Dario Franchitti, Paul Tracy, Kasey Kahne, Will Power, James Hinchcliffe, and dozens more past and future champions. Jim is a two-time Ironman triathlon finisher and uses his training in triathlon, boxing, powerlifting, and several other activities to keep the PitFit clients on the cutting edge of training knowledge.

David P. Ferguson | PhD, RCEP | Science Director
From a young age, Dr. Ferguson was passionate about automobile racing. He constructed cars and participated in amateur racing events. With the limited number of resources on physical conditioning and racecar driving Dr. Ferguson pursed an academic path to learn everything he could about how to develop training programs for individuals involved in automobile racing. He received his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Master of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Exercise Physiology from Texas A&M University. In this process Dr. Ferguson has worked to improve the performance of pit crews for the NASCAR teams Hendrick Motorsports, Michael Waltrip Racing, Earnhardt Gannassi Racing with Felix Sabates, Red Bull Racing, and Stewart-Haas Racing. A highlight from this work was that Dr. Ferguson helped develop a unique pit crew training program that led to Tony Stewart’s team winning the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. In addition to pit crews Dr. Ferguson has worked with several drivers such as Trevor Bayne prior to his 2011 Daytona 500 win and Charlie Kimball who is the first licensed driver with diabetes to win a race in the IZOD IndyCar Series. In addition to optimizing performance of motorsport athletes Dr. Ferguson is uniquely suited to aid in the rehabilitation of motorsports athletes as he is a Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Ferguson currently is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine Motorsport Health and Safety Committee where he works to improve the performance and safety of individuals involved in motorsports at all levels and has published several peer reviewed articles on the subject.
